March mojito madness

Helpful smile [and bargain]  in every aisle update: I can’t say enough good things about the Wellness program at my workplace. It is an amazing benefit that I wish everyone could have. The staff is full of knowledge and is continuously challenging and supporting us to reach our goals.

After the 5K on Tuesday, all of the participants were welcomed back with a few healthy treats. One of them being some pretty delicious power bars. They were so good that I decided to make them at home tonight so that I could have them on hand at all times.

There is a particular green holiday that is coming up this weekend that has been on my mind lately. To celebrate (albeit a little early) tomorrow, my sister and I are going to whip up this healthy green bevie for a little Friday after work cocktail.

Do you celebrate St. Patrick’s day by turning your food and drinks green?

Helpful smile [and bargain] in every aisle

As fast as you can update: Brrr – that was the coldest run I’ve ever done, but it was SO totally worth it.

DMU Leaping Leprechaun 5k

To celebrate after work, I indulged in this:

fire, wine and pizza[the triple threat: fire, wine and pepperoni and banana peppers pizza]

And a handful of these:

sweet potato fries[amazing baked sweet potato fries – recipe via cookie + kate]

Any reason to work up a little sweat over the lunch hour is good in my book, especially when it’s rewarded with yummy healthy treats from DMU’s Wellness Center staff afterward. Both were so delicious that I put making them on my to-do list by the end of the week so that I can share the recipes with my fabulous readers.

I plan on getting the ingredients tomorrow because our local grocery store, Hy-Vee, has 10% off all their health market items every Wednesday. Did you know that? SCORE!

Fish n’ chips update: Fish fry was a dazzling success if I do say so myself. Here are a few snaps of the fried feast:

Tomorrow I am hitting the icy, snow-covered streets to participate in DMU’s Leaping Leprechaun 5K. Not really sure I’m in the best running shape right now, so the plan is to just run as much as I possibly can. Although I will probably be wearing all sorts of warm and moisture-wick gear tomorrow, I thought I would put together a few of my fitness gear faves for you.

What would Karl do update: While working on a few logo projects recently, I came across a fabulous co-op font site, Lost Type. It is a great resource for fun and funky fonts when I need to add a little oomph to my creative concoctions.

My mother-in-law has instituted rotating Sunday family dinners so that we can all get together more often over our favorite things, tasty food and good wine. We are up next on the host list and have decided to put one of Marcus’ new birthday gifts to use – the fish fryer.

Knowing that I can never just throw a dinner party, I have already started to plan ways I can make our gathering more meaningful by adding little touches. Here’s what I’m envisioning:

What’s the skinny update: This past weekend was filled with all sorts of goodness which I will now share via photos. Mostly because it is already Tuesday, I’m lazy and I desperately want to watch more episodes West Wing tonight.

This week is just flying by, isn’t it? I am looking forward to a G.N.O. (gals night out) dinner tomorrow after work at Tally’s in Beaverdale. Other than that, I just need to finish up some side projects this week that have taken a backseat lately. I’ll share more deets with you in the next post. In the meantime, I’ll leave you with this photo of my sweet baby boy, Karl. Ruff!

What’s the skinny?

Freitag update: Birthday dinner was swift but that meant I got to eat a cupcake and get to bed a lot earlier, so I count that as a win in my book.

My mission for the weekend is simple. Well, at least I hope it is simple. I am in the market for a new pair of black skinny jeans. My current pair has lost its shape and faded over the years, so I am due for some new dark dungarees. Here are a few inky denim options that I am thinking might work:

Do you own a pair of black skinnies that you love? Do tell!

Go Maroons update: The Dowling Catholic girls basketball team took to the court last night and my dad, sisters, bro-in-law and the Bean were all on hand to cheer them on. Wells Fargo Arena was louder than I remembered and smelled of buttery popcorn and high schoolers. It turned out to be a real nail biter as the ladies took it down to the wire, sinking a three ball to take it into overtime where they finished off the East High School. Their next task is tomorrow in the form of the Mason City Mohawks.

After work tomorrow night we are off to finally celebrate my sister’s birthday with a family dinner at Samurai Sushi & Hibachi. I must make a mental note not to stuff myself too full of sushi because delicious Scratch Cupcakery cupcakes await us afterwards. We each got to pick which one we’d like to try off of their Friday menu, and I went with Doughlicious this time. I can already taste the cookie goodness now!

Go Maroons!

Sister, sister update: We are planning to celebrate my sister’s birthday with a family dinner on Friday, so I’ll have to keep her gift a secret until then. I’m fairly sure she’s going to love it though!

In other news, we tried out a new recipe last night after I did a Google search for salmon and peppers because I realized they both were sitting in our fridge and needed to be used ASAP. This is what we ended up with:

SalmonPeppers[Salmon and peppers with caper vinaigrette]

While the snow continues to fall outside, I am spending my evening sipping some red wine, listening to Mumford & Sons (obsessed) all while printing and cutting menu cards for a dinner my in-laws are hosting at the end of the week. Talk about multi-tasking!

LOVEly menu cards[Kir Royale – one of my faves!]

In what feels like forever ago (12+ years) I played basketball for my Catholic high school here in Des Moines. I can still remember how grueling practices were and how much I learned about myself during those few years. To this day, whenever I hear Phil Collins’ In the Air Tonight, all I can think about is our pre-game lights out ritual.

Tomorrow I am heading down to The Well to watch the Iowa Girls State Basketball Tournament where my alma mater will be playing in the first round. What is even more amazing is the fact that my coaches are still coaching the team. Can’t wait to cheer them on – go Maroons!

Don't go[Karl doesn’t want his friends to go!]

She is my Pilates workout partner, my go-to for questions about life, my partner in crime at any and all Super Targets, my Bean’s mommy and one of my best friends. Tomorrow my big sis, Mariss, celebrates her day of birth, and as any little sister should, I will shower her with love and fabulous gifts.

Here are a few finds that I know my sis (and plenty of others) would love to find wrapped up for them:

MarissGifts[sandals, earrings, perfume, top, bag, scarf]

It’s hard to explain to someone who doesn’t have a sister how special it is to have one. I’m extra lucky that I get to have two and I can’t imagine a life without them. Pretty sure they know me better than I know myself. Cheers to sisters!

Fire and wine update: As I type this I am sitting fireside with a healthy pour of prosecco in my hand. Jealous? Well don’t be, because it is also snowing away outside.

Winter storm essentials [snow + fire + bubbly = the perfect storm]

This weekend we are watching two of our nieces for a little overnight visit. Being the crafter that I am, I just must find a cute kid-approved project to do with the little ladies on Saturday. Pinterest, here I come!
