I love LOVE

May the force be with you update: Such an enjoyable weekend spent catching up with my husband. We lead busy lives so it is nice to slow down and just spend time with each other. And that is exactly what we did over the past couple of days.

On Saturday we decided to check out the annual Skywalk Golf course downtown. I was defeated, but I did have three hole-in-ones for the day, so I considered that a success. After team One Under Thunder finished up, we decided to reward ourselves with a couple of cocktails at one of my favorite bars in Des Moines, the Cosmopolitan Lounge at The Suites of 800 Locust.

Warmed up by imbibing a bit, we headed across the river to Luna Bistro for what ended up being such a lovely evening. We both can’t say enough good things about the service, ambiance and quality of food at this local gem and are eagerly awaiting our return.

Sunday was lazy and relaxing – just what I needed to completely gear up for this week.

Sunday morning

How cute are my Anthropologie ceramics? Love them!

There is a lot going on this week. Tomorrow, of course is Valentine’s Day, so you know I’ve got something up my sleeve. As a beloved former co-worker (Hi Allison!) once described me, “You love, love.” And she’s exactly right, I do! So without further adieu, here are a few lovey-dovey gifts that any gal would love from her Valentine.

BeMyValentine

1. Vosages, Mini-Exotic Candy Bar Library, $25
2. Michael Kors, Pave Heart Charm Bangle, $55
3.  J.Crew, Poppy King for J.Crew lipstick, $18

May the force be with you

Just a little unwell update: I finally feel like I am almost back to my normal self. (But really, how “normal” can that be?!) Since Marcus and I have made it out of our pajamas for the first time in what feels like forever, we decided to treat ourselves to a little date night at the movies. What did we see this time? Why, Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace in 3D of course!

Star Wars Episode 1

Sweet 3D pod racing glasses, huh?

Have a little (or big) kid in your life that loves anything and everything Star Wars? Look no  further than my two fave stores (Pottery Barn Kids and Williams-Sonoma) for a little Jedi gift-giving inspiration.

StarWarsApron

Williams-Sonoma, Star Wars Adult Apron, $29.95

StarWarsArt

Pottery Barn Kids, Star Wars Art Prints, $29

StarWarsPancakeMolds

Williams-Sonoma, Star Wars Heroes and Villains Pancake molds, $19.95

SWLunchbox

Pottery Barn Kids, Start Wars Classic Lunch Bag, $22.50

I walked away from the movie tonight with a little weekend wisdom that I thought I would share:

Obi-Wan: But Master Yoda says I should be mindful of the future.
Qui-Gon Jinn: But not at the expense of the moment.

This is something I need to constantly remind myself of – to live in the moment and not plan too much in advance. See, Star Wars can teach you something – Have a great weekend!

Just a little unwell

Name and place update: I am back from the dead. Well, at least almost back from the dead. And by “dead” I am speaking the dreaded Norovirus that has taken my body (and Marcus’ too) hostage for the past couple of days. After I clicked ‘publish’ for my last post it was as if the little bug knew it was time to take action. So long story short, we won’t be having any Branstad family gatherings for a while…

After completely Clorox-ing my entire house, I was able to focus what energy I had left on these little guys. I love them and I can’t wait to set them up on the table for our party next week. First things first, getting back my appetite before said dinner.

That's my dad - Fredd with two d's

On my to do list for the rest of the week/end? To get over this virus and back to normal!

Name and place

Winter wear update: Minus all of the snow that got dumped on us this weekend, I’d say it was a success. The wedding on Saturday went off without a hitch. The bride was beautiful and the ceremony was lovely.

Bice wedding

Congratulations Mr. & Mrs. Bice!

I managed to find time on Sunday morning to get the favors all packaged up and ready to go for the upcoming Valentine’s dinner.

Now we play the waiting game...

And we even had a little Branstad family get-together on Sunday night to watch the Super Bowl.

A full weekend it was! I am already looking forward to next weekend when we have absolutely nothing scheduled.

Tomorrow I am planning to continue work on the other parts of the Valentine’s dinner. Now I am on to focusing on the name place cards for each attendee. Here are so ideas I am thinking about using:

Winter wear

Package perfect update: Seriously, this has been the longest week EVER! On Wednesday I could have sworn it was Friday. That is never a good sign.

You would think with such a loooonnngggg week (and without Marcus being in town) that I would’ve had plenty of time to get the favors all put together and packaged up…but I didn’t. Maybe next week.

In the meantime, enjoy this video of the Bean (with her new pigtails) teaching us what a doggie does. If you can’t tell, she is panting like a dog. Oh, and yes that is the dog’s leash around her neck. Such a little ham.

Tomorrow we will be making our way up north to Ames for our friends’ wedding. Hoping the snow holds off until after we’ve made it back home safely, but packing my Uggs and a change of clothes just in case. Winter parties can be tricky like that. Best way to tackle a winter wedding? Dresses with sleeves with the option to add tights, like these:

Gianni Bini, Ovid dress, $41.30

Kate Spade, Luna dress, $177

Modcloth

ModCloth, Forget Me Haute dress, $69.99

Dillards

M.S.S.P., Velvet Burnout dress, $51.80

Rock Chalk update: It was a rough weekend for my Jayhawks, but they can’t play like that and expect to win games. All gripes aside, I did have fun watching the game with my family and spending some time with the Bean.

No Rock Chalk

No Rock Chalk chant this time...

After watching that dismal performance I needed my spirits lifted and they were at the Lady Antebellum concert that night. The opening acts were Thompson Square and Darius Rucker and I am pretty sure Darius stole the show! Hootie and the Blowfish forever.

Lady A tix

The much anticipated Valentine’s dinner is approaching so I think this week I shall work on packaging up the favors. Just need to make sure I have all the right items to tie ’em up perfectly. Here are a few great ideas on how to make take your favors to the next level.

Rock Chalk

Smile big update: I think the whole ID photo taking thing went pretty well. See for yourself.

Pretty good

Pretty good minus the strange loose hair on the one side.

While the cat’s away the mice will play. Well, my version of that is while Marcus is in Canada sitting in frigid temps to catch fish, I will take the offer from his mom to enjoy dinner out at La Mie.

La Mie

Dinner at La Mie. On top: what I ate; on bottom: what I craved.

Tomorrow brings more playing, and in this case it means a Pilates class in the morning followed by watching KU take down Iowa State. Rock Chalk!

After cheering on our team my sister, Morgan, and I are heading to the Well for the Lady Antebellum, Darius Rucker and Thompson Square concert. I am not an over-the-top country fan, but I’ll never pass up a free concert in a press box. Yehaw!

Smile big

Cheers and beer soup, Amen update: The soup was a bust – well, it was if you ask me. The cheese just didn’t melt the way I thought it would and the addition of the sausage with casing just didn’t sit well with me.

Better luck next time

Better luck next time.

But what made up for the bad soup was the package I received today from the oh-so-fabulous  Tory Burch. Who’s ready for some sunny poolside days?! ME!

Tomorrow I have my appointment to get a new ID badge photo taken for work. Just like driver’s licenses, ID badge photos (when done wrong) can really be a Debbie Downer.

So here are some tips (via Beauty and the Feast) to remember to make your ID picture or driver’s license turn out fab:

  • TIP #1 – Smile slightly
Instead of flashing a toothy smile (or none at all), keep your mouth closed and only smile slightly.
  • TIP #2 – Lose 10 pounds
OK not literally. By bringing your neck forward and leaning slightly out you will create the effect of a tighter jawline, thus taking off the extra 10 pounds the camera adds.
  • TIP #3 – Squinty eyes
very slight squinty eye shows confidence. Obviously, don’t go overboard to seduce the camera — this is a standard ID picture we’re talking about.
  • TIP #4 – Women with long hair, keep it looking neat
Leaving hair loose is fine, but just remember for a straight-on shot, make sure you keep your hair hanging over both your shoulders.
  • TIP #5 – For men, scruff can work in your favor
To go in with a 5 o’clock shadow or not? Scruff absorbs a little more light and in bad lighting that you generally find where you get your standard ID pictures taken, this generally looks better.
  • TIP #6 – Don’t wear a color too close to your skin tone
Since you probably won’t know what that color will do, go for something vibrant.

Cheese and beer soup, Amen

Birthday boy update: Marcus got to celebrate his day of birth for the entire weekend and this evening. Yesterday we took a trip to the mall to pick up a few microplanes that he’s been just dying to have then headed to the theater to catch George Lucas’ movie Redtails. We even decided that since it was his birthday that we could indulge a little bit and share some buttery popcorn. Worth it.

Best gift giver ever.

Movie date

Pretty good way to spend a birthday.

Tonight we had the opportunity to celebrate some more with both of our families at one of our local faves, Django. The food was delish as always, the wine flowed (B.Y.O.W. – no corkage ever!), and I may have snuck a piece of champagne cake in my belly. Again, worth it.

Mmmmmm Oreo

Mmmmmm Oreo...

It has been cold and snowy lately here in Iowa. I know, I know, you’re thinking, “Duh Nicole, of course it’s cold – it’s winter!” But really, it’s been such a mild winter so far that my body isn’t sure how to respond to the bone chilling cold air that is whipping around now.

The only way I see fit to combat such a thing is to make a heaping pot of soup and enjoy it slowly. So that is just what I have on my to-do list for tomorrow night. Marcus and I are watching our carb-intake so I was trolling the internet for a low-carb soup and came across this one. Sounds right up my alley!

Marcus shared this video with me today – think we could get Karl to pray with us before our dinner tomorrow night? Haha, yeah right.

And they’re off update: The pretty little invites are en route to our friends and family’s homes and I can’t wait for the RSVPs to start rolling in. Marcus has informed me that this year’s dinner will be French-themed. Oui, oui!

Checked that one off the 'ol to-do list.

Other fun things that happened this week: I got two delayed Christmas presents. Check them out!

It is a certain (handsome) someone’s 28th birthday this Sunday and all he is asking for is Scheel’s gift cards. That is so boring and no fun to buy, so I obviously won’t be purchasing those for him. But here are some great guy gift ideas for that special man in your life.

1. Patagonia, Men’s R2 Jacket, $159
2. Brooks Brothers, Non-Iron Regular Fit Alternating Tattersall Sport Shirt, $98.50
