His and Hers

Half way through May update: Another week has flown by and after looking at this upcoming month’s calendar, I don’t feel guilty for spending most of it relaxing. My week in review via Instragram pics:

I am officially dubbing this year the year of weddings for us. So far we have eight to attend and one of them is tomorrow. The bride is my bestie’s little sis and I can’t wait to celebrate with them and sip some champagne.

Do you have a lot of weddings to attend this year? If so, it’s always great to have some gifts on hand that way you can just grab one and wrap it on the fly. Here are some great his and hers wedding gifts that I am sure will fit the bill.

mr. and mrs. gifts

1. Kate Spade, Crown point flute pair, $65
2. Overstock, His/hers passport covers, $15.99 each
3. Jonathan Adler, Mr & Mrs Muse salt & pepper shakers, $48
4. Kate Spade,  Two of a kind old fashion, $50

Half way through May

Tea time update: Such a beautiful weekend here in Des Moines and it was spent with family celebrating MOMS!

Here is what we ended up getting my mom:

Gifts for Mom - Linda

The Cheese Shop Des Moines gift card, Williams-Sonoma dish towels & dish cloths,

And this is what we got my mother-in-law:

The Cheese Shop Des Moines gift card,
Cooking with Alessandra gift certificate good for a cooking class

It’s a pretty low-key week ahead for me, but I am really looking forward to the weekend. A Haas/Branstad girls night out dinner at El Patio (hello margaritas!) on Friday followed by a Driscoll wedding event on Saturday. We’ll top things off with Mackenzie’s dance recital on Sunday afternoon. Whew, I’m tired just listing all of that!

On my to-do list for the week: cutting peonies to bring inside, catching up on shows, some light reading and spending some time outdoors.

Tea time

Daddy’s girl update: As soon as the 5 o’clock whistle blew I was out the door and on my way home with the windows down. After I snagged my husband at home we headed down to the East Village to enjoy an evening celebrating my dad. Once again, Luna Bistro did not disappoint. My prix fixe consisted of the grilled romaine house salad, seared salmon and peach + berry compote to top it off. All were absolutely amazing!

This weekend we celebrate the moms in our life! Tomorrow I will be attending the Terrace Hill Mother’s Day tea just like last year, and I think it’ll be the perfect occasion to bust out my new navy skirt from Target. Here are two ensembles fit for tea time.

Daddy’s girl

Mom on my mind update: Yes! Both of my mom’s Mother’s Day gifts are taken care of, but I can’t post them on here because I’m going to try and keep it a surprise until this weekend. I’ll be sure to share photos later though.

In the meantime, while I was out and about yesterday I managed to finally check out the new Shops at Target collection (mentioned here). Although only part of the collection was actually in store, I snagged a super cute navy eyelit skirt that will be perfect for summer. Highly recommend this one as it can either be dressed up or down.

Also, a little shout out today to my dad (Fredd – double D, Haas – double A) as he turns another year older. Dads and daughters have a special bond that is sometimes hard to explain, so I will just share a little photo series that sums up how much this man means to me.

me Dad

One of those moments I will remember forever. I love you dad! HAPPY BIRTHDAY

All I have to say is T.G.I.F. tomorrow, am I right? We are celebrating my dad’s birthday tomorrow night with a family dinner at one of my local faves, Luna Bistro. Marcus and I visited the joint for Valentine’s Day this year and are looking forward to a return visit with an entirely different seasonal menu. I shall report back on how the evening goes and what I decide to order. Oh the possibilities!

Mom on my mind

H&M on my mind update: Why do three-day weekends always seem to go by faster than regular two-day weekends?! Fresh off our trip to KC and I could sure use a few more hours of sleep. We had such a great time hanging out with my family that I didn’t want it to end. I got to see two Yankee victories (grand slam included), had a fabulous date night with my husband, and managed to find almost all of the things from H&M that I had wanted. I’d say this past weekend was a success!

On the to-do list for this week – figure out what to get our moms for Mother’s Day. Do you have any good last-minute ideas for me?

H&M on my mind

Beat the heat update: My bags are packed and I’m ready to hit the road for hotter temps and maybe a few shelled peanuts and a dog at the stadium.

packing for KC

I know. It looks like chaos right now…

We have four tickets to every game this weekend, so we are swapping who gets to go to each one. Tomorrow night’s game will be just dad and his girls – I can’t wait! Saturday will be spent shopping – tracking down some deals, steals and fabulous finds. In the evening, Marcus and I will be heading to one of our KC faves, the Webster House, for a little date night. And we’ll finish out the weekend with another day game on Sunday before we head home.

On Saturday, I have a few ‘must hit’ spots on my agenda and H&M is definitely at the top of my list! Here is what I’m on a hunt for:

Beat the heat

May Day update: I love a good May Day treat, so I decided to pop into my local Bruegger’s  yesterday to bring the office some bagel love, along with the fab flowers from Trader Joe’s. After work we got a visit from our niece Sofia with May Day cupcakes. I would have a picture of the cupcake, but I ate it too fast. Whoops.

May Day at DMU

This weekend we are heading to Kansas City with my family to take in a few ball games. You see, the Yankees are in town playing the Royals and I never miss an opportunity to see my boys in pinstripes. I am literally counting down the days until Friday, but after seeing the forecast for KC today I’m struggling with my packing list. Temps are predicted to be in the 90s on Friday and Saturday and I know what that Kansas heat does to me.

So what’s a gal to do? I want to look cute, but still be able to keep my cool (a.k.a. not look like  a sweaty mess!) I have a feeling my looks will go a little something like this…

shopping and a ballgame

Ballgame: hat, tee, jeans

May Day

Freakin’ weekend update: What a dreary weekend we had. Boo! I hope that the forecast is right and that there is warmer weather ahead. I can handle the rain, but those chilly temps have got to go! Even with the crummy weather, I still managed to have a fabulous weekend – time with the fam, some new kicks, my first gymnastics meet and a baby shower. Not too shabby.

weekend update

Tomorrow is May 1st – can you believe it?! Growing up I remember rushing home after school so that we could be the first to deliver May Day baskets to our friends. My mom would stay behind the wheel and we’d ring the doorbell and drop off our popcorn and candy filled cups then race back to the car, hop in and take off in hopes of not getting caught. What a thrill!

This is definitely something I want to do with my children in the future, but these days I usually just buy some fresh flowers for myself to celebrate. I think tomorrow I will bring some flowers and treats to work for our weekly meeting.

Freakin’ weekend

Porch party update: It was just nice enough last night to sit out on the east porch while we were waiting for dinner to be ready. We don’t see the New Jersey Johnson’s often, so it was great catching up with them. And of course, I always love seeing my nieces!

New Jersey Johnson's visit

Another work week is behind us and the weekend is here. The only things on my agenda are a gymnastics meet and a baby shower – both on Sunday. Otherwise I’m free as a bird. What to do, what to do….

Porch party

Not a square update: Another beautiful day here in Des Moines with the sun shining brightly. So glad I got to spend a bulk of it outdoors, down on Court Avenue, painting a fabulous square (if I do say so myself) for Des Moines University as part of the Drake Relays. Here is the finished product:

WE WON!!!

Tomorrow we have a family BBQ with some relatives that are in Des Moines for a visit from New Jersey. I can’t wait to hang with the fam – think this fabulous weather can continue so we can sip some vino on the east porch? I hope so.
