Gene on the big screen update: Totally bummed out right now. We got to the theater 30 minutes early only to find out that it has been sold out. So how does one recover from such heartbreak? By buying a new neon necklace and drowning her sorrows in warm, butter-drenched lobster fresh from Maine. I guess it ended up being an okay night 😉

Gene on the big screen

Christmas in July update: I’m still coming to grips today with the massive collaboration announcement yesterday. This could be worse than Black Friday. Better start preparing yourselves now for long lines and sprinters in the stores. I found more information about the super collab collection hitting stores on December 1.

1. Mark your calendars, there will be a big unveil of the products on October 16.
2. Each designer will create 1-3 gift-y items each for the collection, which will be sold at Target and Neiman Marcus, both in stores and online.

Dinner is served: Burger and Iowa sweet corn.

I’m a sucker for old musical films (evidence here), so when I get a chance to see them back on the big screen you can find me in the front row with popcorn in hand. Such is the case tomorrow – celebrating it’s 60th anniversary, Singin’ in the Rain will return to the theaters for one night only. Gene, Debbie and Donnie – here I come.

I usually get up earlier than necessary in the morning so that I can have a little quiet ‘me time’ before I head out the door for work. It is spent getting my lunch packed, taking care of Karl and having some breakfast while catching up on shows, emails and my Facebook and Twitter feeds (thrilling I know). While scrolling this morning, I came across a mind-blowing announcement from Target – its next collaboration with (wait for it) Neiman Marcus!

Jazz on the hill

Pinkish hue update: So happy that there is a “cool down” happening right now. Well, if you consider upper 80s, low 90s cool. It was a little toasty this weekend, even the pool water was a balmy 93 degrees, but that didn’t keep me from enjoying it.

Tomorrow I will attend yet another fabulous Des Moines summer event – Metro Arts Alliance’s 30th anniversary of Jazz in July concerts. The Belin Quartet will be rockin’ the grounds at Terrace Hill (pics from last year) and I can’t wait to sip some wine on the east porch and listen to them play.

Bueller? update: Who doesn’t love watching a classic movie outdoors on a lawn? Morgan and I had a blast tonight at the Des Moines Art Center‘s showing of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Now, if only I could play hookey from work tomorrow…

I don’t know about you but I’m ready for the weekend. Do you have anything fun planned? I am going to try to spend as much time as possible poolside with an iced bevie in hand. I’ve been meaning to try this Raspberry Beer Cocktail from A Cup of Mai and I think it’s going to happen this weekend!

Red, white and blue

Let’s get it poppin’ update: I did not let the unbearable (oppressive even) heat keep me away from the Pops concert tonight. It was just as much fun as I remembered from last year. There is something so special about sitting on the steps of your state’s capitol listening to the symphony blaring patriotic tunes while massive fireworks explode in the background. Amazing. American.

Iowa has the most beautiful capitol.

Tomorrow I will celebrate our Independence Day the only way I know how – with a good ‘ol parade. Check out the pictures of the Bean at the Urbandale parade last year. It’s hard to believe how much she has grown! In honor of our nation’s birthday – here is my take on wearing our colors for the fourth:

Bestie’s birthday

Keep your cool update: The high yesterday was 102 degrees. The only way to make that bearable was my post-work dip in the pool accompanied by this little cocktail.

Tomorrow is my bestie Molly’s birthday and I can sum our relationship up in one word: lovies. Yep, lovies. It’s our term of endearment, email sign-off and even an adjective to describe how much we obsessively like something. Molly, if you are reading this (which you better be!) I just wanted to take the time to tell you how much I lovies you and to wish you the happiest of birthdays!

Yep, this about sums it up.

Keep your cool

Flighty fashion update: Back in action and feeling relaxed as ever. We got back into town on Saturday and today was my first day back in the office. While most people dread coming home to laundry and emails, for some reason this time, I didn’t mind it. Must be a sign of a true vacation.

It’s heating up this week here in Des Moines with forecasted temps in the 100s – YUCK! When it is this hot there are some measures I take in order to keep my cool:

NARS Multiple stick: When you don’t feel like wearing too much make-up swipe this stuff on your lips, cheeks and eyelids and you’re set.

Danskin bike shorts: Perfect to wear under skirts and dresses to keep legs from rubbing when it’s crazy hot outside.

Braids: Keep your hair off of your face and the nape of your neck.
