Sentimental Sunday dinners

Go green update: Note to self. You can’t have a green monster smoothie in the morning and then pizza at night. But I guess it’s better than donuts, right?

One of my new years resolutions is to cook more. I am one of those lucky gals who has a husband who loves to cook, so I rarely spend time in the kitchen. But I figure it is high time that we put our unconventional guest book to good use.

I can’t wait to rifle through all of our wedding guests’ family recipes in the morning and pick out something to make for us to enjoy for dinner. My goal is to choose one recipe from the box on the first Sunday of each month this year and I am going to try my hardest to make this resolution stick.

Go green

Looking ahead update: I rang in the new year with my sister and bro-in-law enjoying my husband’s delicious osso buco all while wearing my favorite slippers. Who says you need to be decked out in sequins and heels to celebrate!

With the new year finally here, it is time to get started on some of those to-dos (or resolutions) that you have made. While surfing the web today, I came across a great blog, A Pair of Pears, with a super cute printable to do list. Writing things down has always helped me stay focused, and I have a feeling this is going to be a new fave blog of mine!

In an effort to kick off 2013 on a healthier foot (I already had oatmeal this morning), tomorrow I am going to be whipping up some green goodness in the form of a smoothie from local gal, Iowa Girl Eats, for breakfast. This was her most popular recipe in all of 2012, so why not give it a whirl.

Looking ahead

Heavy heart update: Even though my trip to Hays was for a somber reason, it is always good to reconnect with loved ones. I got to spend time with my grandma, aunts, uncles and cousins reminiscing about Mike and how much joy he brought into our lives. He will be missed dearly, but definitely not forgotten. I plan on having a ‘tall cold one’ for him at the next Yankees game I attend.

Weekend in Hays

December 31. Can you believe it? This year has flown by and I am amazed at how much I have done over the last 365 days. As I look forward to all that 2013 will bring, I can’t help but to think about how thankful I am for all that I have. The past couple of days have taught me a lot about how I’d like to approach the upcoming year, but I think I can pretty much sum it up in one sentence: Don’t put off tomorrow what you can do today.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

But it is with a heavy heart that I write this blog post. Shortly before all of the festivities were to begin, I found out that my dear cousin, Mike, was unexpectedly taken from us. I was lucky enough to get to spend some time with him recently during our annual trip to Kansas City to watch the Yankees take on the Royals. I will remember his smile, his huge heart and his undying love of both baseball and the Haas family. We’ll miss you Mike!

Wonderful wishes

Sunday funday update: Downing a mimosa (or two) at Centro was the perfect way to kick off our day-o-fun. And after being sucked into the wonderfully fabulous world of Cirque du Soleil, I headed home to give my KitchenAid mixer a workout. My boss had cooked up this recipe from The Pioneer Woman a couple of weeks ago and it was insanely good. After I took just one bite of The Best Coffee Cake. Ever. a lightbulb went off and I knew this was the perfect thing to cook up for our Christmas Eve brunch.

The Pioneer Woman: The Best Coffee Cake. Ever.

Over the next two days the plan is to spend as much time as possible with the ones I love. I hope you do the same and have a very Merry Christmas.

its Mayday update: Thought I’d give you a sneak peek at the May Book I designed for myself. Santa has such good taste!

I went with the non-dated weekly agenda for the inside of the notebook, but they have all sorts of options to customize yours completely. What do you think?

WeeklyAgendaTomorrow is shaping up to be quite the super Sunday starting with brunch at a local spot followed by a show I’ve been dying to see. Marcus and I are heading to see my first Cirque du Soleil production ever. This particular experience is called Quidam, and it follows a young girl who is bored and feels as though her life has lost all its meaning. Seeking to fill the void, she slides into an imaginary world where she meets characters who encourage her to free her soul. I can’t wait!

Mayday

Winter wonderland update: Make that TWO snow days for me which brings me to my official Christmas break for four days. Yesterday was the perfect snow day complete with coffee and Bailey’s in bed and a Parenthood marathon.

Today, since the power was still out at work, I had a bonus snow day and spent most of it doing some last-minute shopping with my sister and Sidney.

Christmas shopping [a little blurry, but that’s what happens when you are shopping with a 2-year-old]

I have it on good authority that the big guy in the red suit has heard my answers and will be bringing me a little something special from one of my new favorite sites, May Designs. What started as an idea to create cuter notebooks has evolved into so much more. I love the customization you can create for each notebook, and don’t even get me started on the monogrammed stationery.

These make perfect gifts and would help kick off the new year in organized fashion!

Andes Mint Cookies update: I put our KitchenAid mixer to the test tonight and made these fabulous Andes Mint Cookies. They are perfect to pair with coffee and Homemade Bailey’s as you visit with family and friends over the holidays.

As I type this, snow is falling furiously outside and in Des Moines we are bracing ourselves for Winter Storm Draco (Malfoy). I feel like I’m in grade school again tonight as I am secretly hoping that we will get to have a snow day tomorrow.

In honor of the blizzard a-brewin’ outside, and in hopes of playing in a winter wonderland soon, I thought it would be fun to round-up some super cute cold weather gear that would be perfect make snow angels in.

Blogoversary update: Last week seems so long ago. Like many of you, I still can’t get Newtown, Connecticut and its people off of my mind. The horrific events that unfolded last Friday changed the lives of those people forever, and they definitely had a profound impact on me. So when I got to see some friends and family over the weekend, I made sure to visit a little longer, laugh a little louder and hug a little tighter.

Here is my weekend in review via some Instagram photos:

With the holidays right around the corner, I think it’s about time I do a little cookie baking, don’t you? Good thing I just received a recipe from my mom that will fit the bill. Can’t wait to whip up a batch tomorrow. {Click image below for a printable recipe card.}

G.G.G. update: Well, we still haven’t picked out my father-in-law’s gift yet, but my vote is for one of these sleek, no-fuss briefcases. What do you think?

Tomorrow marks the second anniversary of Tomorrow’s To Dos. Can you believe it? I know I can’t. Time flies when you are making checklists I guess. I will be celebrating with my fabulous co-workers at our annual holiday cheers outing.
