Fall-ify

My new word after this weekend’s whirlwind events. One because it’s fall and I can’t seem to stop buying pumpkins and two because I feel like I could collapse after the past few days.

I singlehandedly tamed Saturday morning with Evie by my side, hitting up the following locations all before the noon hour: Starbucks (duh), Lowe’s, Shear Madness (ugh, haircuts are the worst), Goodwill, Dollar Tree, Wal-Mart and Plato’s Closet. Out with the old and in with the new this fall.

I got to slow down for a little bit to enjoy watching my youngest niece, Brooklyn, celebrate turning 1 – smash cake and all.

Brookie turns 1[my brown-eyed Brookie baby is the cutest]

Evie slept through pretty much the entire party, so when he woke up we ventured out for a few more stops, Old Navy and Target. I snagged an awesome, acorn-hued sweater for a steal and played the part of goofy mom while hanging out in the Halloween costume section.

I crashed promptly by 8:30 p.m. #thatmomlife. But don’t worry, I was up and at em on Sunday morning so that I could be the first person to file into Target’s doors because I needed to get my hands on some Adam Lippes x Target plaid goodness for my log home. I picked up a buffalo check pillow, set of kitchen towels and coordinating dog treat holder – because Karl is super fancy and I am super anal about seeing his treat box out on our countertop every morning.

After a quick trip to Wal-Mart to pick up (more!) pumpkins and a few of my favorite fall candles, I headed home to play outside with the boys the rest of the day. While Everett was napping, I set up all of my festive fall stuff and even had time to whip up a batch of my Grandma’s snickerdoodle cookies.

Fall frontsteps 2015

As we sat on the front steps last night, surrounded by pumpkins and mums, enjoying cookies and milk (well deserved wine for me), I knew my weekend of running around had paid off. Look how happy this kid is!!!

Obsessed: fall favorites

I’m still very much obsessed with the same things as last year, you know me and my love for plaid, but this year’s fall faves have been infused with a sort of edge-y coolness.

obsessions_fallfavorites

Slim joggers: I have been afraid of this silhouette for over a year, but my impending flight to France was just the nudge I needed to wade into the jogger waters. I stuck with a laid back sweatpants style with some cool quilted knee patches.

Vintage & Made Fair: Since our move last year, I’m taking the time to find pieces to add to our interior with a used/rustic/already been loved feel. I have a hunch this could be a gold mine for me.

Military-inspired jacket: I love a good transitional jacket and on a recent trip to H&M I found this army green version with faux leather sleeves and I can’t wait to wear it!

Grey nail polish: Darker nail polish starts to make an appearance during this time of year on my nails, but I usually tend to stick with the wine or burgundy color. Think I’ll give grey a spin this go round.

Download: Beaverdale Fall Festival

Growing up and attending grade school in a smaller community neighborhood made a strong impression on me. That feeling returns every year when residents come together for their annual Fall Festival. As Evie gets older, I hope he looks forward to it as much as I do.

The force

I have to be honest, before I met my husband I had never seen any of the Star Wars movies. Gasp! The horror!

Growing up in a house with two sisters, the “force” was never very strong with us. Fast-forward to present day living in a house full of boys (dog included) and it’s hard to not get caught up in all the hype.

With a new movie due out this holiday season, it’s hard to miss the onslaught of Star Wars themed stuff in the stores. I mean, who are the crazy parents spending $4,ooo on a Millennium Falcon bed? Not me, sorry Evie.

But don’t worry Chewie, you’re in luck because I’ve pulled together some more pocket friendly options for your little Luke or Leia.

Taste the world in Iowa

WorldFoodandMusicFest2015I know it may be hard to believe, but Iowa has quite the diverse culinary scene. The best way to see (and taste!) all that this great state has to offer is to head down to the Walnut Street Bridge on September 18-20 to partake in the World Food & Music Festival.

It has been a couple of years since I’ve made it to the fest, but I’m looking forward to sampling this year’s 53 international food vendors, representing cuisine from over 20 different countries.

Not sure which one to try? Have a taste of them all. You can sample specific dishes at each of the stops around the globe for just $1! Oh yeah, and did I mention that admission is FREE too. And let’s not forget about the live entertainment.

There is definitely something for everyone, so grab the kiddies (hello chocolate adventure) and make plans to get there early as lines can form at many of the fan favorites.

Forthcoming fall

It truly felt like fall was not too far away this weekend. The morning air was crisp, I busted out my new cardi and indulged in my first Pumpkin Spice Latte of the season.

[beautiful fall sunset]

We spent our Saturday afternoon tailgating (sans Evie) up in Ames for the big in-state rivalry game between the Cyclones and Hawkeyes. This year the black and gold prevailed.

On Sunday I managed to get some Target time in (by myself!!!) and snagged the perfect items for Everett’s plaid themed birthday party. Even though his birthday isn’t until December, I knew that if I didn’t snag these now they’d be gone.

Labor Day lake life

This past weekend we spent the last few days of “summer” at the lake house as a family. The warm weather and newly purchased paradise pad made for the perfect combination to usher in a new season. Here are a few of my favorite snaps!

Night, night little pumpkin

Guys, I have a thing for holiday themed pajamas. It’s pretty serious. See exhibits 1, 2 and 3 below from Christmas 2014. PajamasXmas2014I tend to stick to the big ones though (read: no need for a full on intervention…yet), and Halloween is definitely one of them! Just in case you like a little dose of crazy in the form of cute kiddo jammies like me, I’ve rounded up the best out there this year for your little ghouls.

But Nicole, it’s only September! I know, I know. I like to get a head start so Ev can wear his jams throughout the entire month! Plus, these tend to fly off the racks. So if you see them, snag ’em!

Plaid tidings

It comes as no surprise that I have a slight obsession with plaid given our current homestead. So the newest Target collab lookbook (Adam Lippes x Target) has me freakin’ out just a smidge.

And the cool thing about it is the bullseye didn’t just stop at the designer gear. It plans on extending the plaid madness throughout the entire store over the next couple of months.

Here are the cross-hatch patterned items that I can already see myself snagging up!

Road trip: Adventureland

Marcus and I aren’t big on the whole theme park thing (except if you are referencing Wally World), but I couldn’t pass up a free trip to our local amusement park with my sis and bro-in-law this past weekend.

I went into it with low expectations considering Ev is still too small to ride most of the rollercoasters and water rides (RIP Log Ride). But I was shocked at how awesome he was while being strapped into the stroller for half a day, only getting out to get on a few kiddie rides. Homeboy loved it!

Adventureland 2015_9

Adventureland has been around since we were kids and I definitely remember some of my trips there as a child. Since then, they’ve even added a water park portion (which we did not get to because of nap time) that I think we’ll check out in a couple of years. Definitely fun for the whole family.
