TTD faves: Easter baskets 2018

Easter is only a few weeks away so the bunny better hop to it if s/he wants to get everything ordered on time!

This bunny has already made her list and even secured a few goodies already for the boys. In case you (ahem, I mean the bunny) is still looking for ideas, I’ve got you covered!

Little looks: St. Patrick’s Day 2018

This seems crazy, but St. Patrick’s Day is this Saturday so why not bring out all the green gear for your littles! I’ve rounded up my favorite looks fit for a little luck and to keep the pinches at bay.

One of my faves, Tubby Todd, released their line of spring goodies earlier this week. The Tubby Sweets collection was designed in collaboration with Baby Boy Bakery and is perfect for springtime – and to tuck inside Easter baskets!

If you have kids that are a little older the ours and are local to Des Moines make plans to  join Polk County Conservation naturalists for a campfire program about the wild night life in Jester Park on March 15.

I’m trying to find more time for reading these days and I just started The Woman in the Window and can’t put it down. On deck: Ready Player One.

Little looks: spring break 2018

Spring Break across the country is right around the corner, so it’s time to start thinking about picking out some new warmer weather gear for the littles.

I am doing the exact same thing ahead of our Californian adventure, so I have rounded up my faves to share!

Life lately: March madness

The past few weeks have been very busy around here, hence the radio silence on the blog. Thought I would share a few of my favorite photos lately to give you a quick peek into our world.

[poor little buddy was diagnosed with strep earlier this week hence my radio silence]

I may have had a ten minute freak out when I heard this news yesterday morning. My absolute favorite wellies company is doing a collaboration with my favorite box store and it’s coming April 14 (a week earlier if you are a REDcard holder!).

Childhoods Clothing has quickly become one of my favorite kid clothes brands. The boys have a few of their basic crewneck sweatshirts and I constantly reach for them! Ev just tore the knee of his striped night set so I’m eyeing this beautiful citron color for him.

The Ever Co is launching their spring line this Sunday at 9PM and boy, do they have some cute gear in the line up this time! I’m particularly fond of the ‘That Ballpark Life” baseball tee.

Little Big Night

If you have followed along over the years you know that around Valentine’s Day every year we love to host a lavish dinner party with friends and family called The Big Night. Here is a little look at last year’s madness.

Well, this year without the commercial kitchen the chefs decided to reduce the scale and Marcus and I hosted a more intimate affair called Little Big Night.

Once again, I’ve enlisted my lovely husband to do a little recap as to how it all went down.

Ever since my father’s appointment as Ambassador to the Peoples Republic of China last year, one nagging question lingered in my head…what are we going to do about Big Night?

Gone are the days of Terrace Hill’s expansive commercial kitchen, it’s ornate Victorian dinning room, silver service for 20, and the countless other niceties we had the privilege of enjoying. However, the only constant in the world is change and this tradition was far too important to the founders, to let slip away because we lost our venue.

A little known fact, this event was actually born in a small kitchen in an apartment on Polk Boulevard in Des Moines. The meal, guest list, flower budget, all needed to be slashed. We decided to host the 8th Annual Big Night (we actually named it “Little Big Night”) at our home in Adel.

Ship off the kids, board the dog, because four dudes with a penchant for the finer things are about to wow their spouses and significant others in a regular sized residential kitchen!
The concept: draw straws Iron Chef style
Four courses, four main ingredients (Foie Gras, Lobster, Scallop, Lamb), four Dudes. You draw for course number and ingredient.
This is how it played out:
1st Course – Amuse Bouche – Kevin – Lobster
2nd Course – Peter – Scallop
3rd Course – Marcus – Foie Gras
4th Course – Nate – Lamb
The menu:

[Fresh Shucked Sea Scallop Tiradito – Salmon Roe, Truffle Pearls, Edible Floral]LittleBigNight2018_07
[Duck Trio – Seared Foie Gras and Breast, with Leg Confit, Parsnip Puree, Blueberry Cognac Sauce]LittleBigNight2018_08
[Herb Encrusted Rack of Lamb – Roasted Rainbow Carrot Medley, Red Wine Jus]LittleBigNight2018_09
[Gateau Marjolaine, followed by an assortment of cheeses]

[18 month check-up // how?! he was just born! ]

Last weekend my sister and I did an Art Noir Aerobics class at the Des Moines Art Center and it was a great way to start the weekend off on the right foot. After we sweated and lunged our way through the galleries we were treated to delicious goodies from The Cutler Kitchen. Kiley is the sweetest and her treats are so tasty (and healthy too!) – highly recommend!

I’ve been meaning to get some fabric dinning chairs to go at the head of our table for when we have dinner parties, but just never got around to it. Well, until I saw these buffalo plaid beauties. Come to mama!

You all know I love me some Target, and while I tend to go more traditional/farmhouse in our log home, I think their new line, Opalhouse, is so fun!

TTD faves: Hearth & Hand spring 2018

It’s no secret that I have a serious girl crush on Joanna Gaines of HGTV’s Fixer Upper fame. So when her collaboration with Target was announced last fall, I was in full-on freak out mode.

Her holiday goodies were amazing and I couldn’t wait to see what else would be in store. Well, her spring/Easter line just hit stores and it is crazy cute. I’ve perused the shelves at my local Target and picked out my faves to share with my lovely readers!

Over the holidays we got new appliances in our kitchen and switched from an electric to gas stove. My husband is in heaven, but I’m constantly freaking out because Fitz has been turning on the gas! After a quick heads-up from a fellow mama about these safety covers, I think we should be able to feel a little more relaxed in our kitchen now.

We were looking for a quick meal last weekend and Marcus found this Chicken Parmesan Stuff Shells recipe via Food Network. I can definitely see this one being a repeat in our household!

One of my favorite things that my Grandma always had out in her kitchen was her changeable wooden block calendar. I have a black and white version similar to hers in my office at work, but I love this one from McGee & Co.
