Meet and Greet

If the Dress Fits Update: Ok readers, this is all I can give you to look at from the dress fitting since I know my fiance frequents my posts (or at least I think he does…). I can’t wait to put this dress on in 85 short days!

Going to the chapel and we're gonna get married!

The Bachelorette festivities get underway tomorrow with a little meet up at local joint Sbrocco. I thought it would be nice to have the wedding party meet each other before the main event on Saturday. Two of the bridesmaids will be coming from out-of-town and haven’t met Marcus’ family yet. I can’t think of a better way to mingle than over some social plates and wine flights. I haven’t been to Sbrocco since they revamped their menu, so I’m really looking forward to this little outing.

If the Dress Fits

Black and Yellow Update: After spending about an hour in my closet and rummaging through my drawers, I have picked out a winning ensemble. Bachelorette party here I come!

Black, White and Yellow all over!

Tomorrow is the big day – my first dress fitting. I’m a little nervous because I’ve had my dress for about a year now and haven’t tried it on since it came in. Should be interesting. I know my mom is ready to get the thing out of her house. She has an alarm that goes off on her phone every month to remind her to take it out of the garment bag and let the train down to reduce wrinkles. She’s over it!

For all the brides out there, here are some great dress fitting tips. A few of which I didn’t even think of…

1. Make sure you have all of your accessories that you’ll be wearing on the big day. This includes shoes, undergarments, and your veil. Another great idea is to pick out and bring possible jewelry options too. It’ll give you a better idea of what you want to wear that day.

2. Wear minimal makeup. You don’t want to really cake on the foundation that day for fear of getting it on your pristine white (or ivory) gown. You know how hard it is to get make up out of clothes so best thing to do is just avoid it happening by wearing less to your fitting.

3. Bring along the person who will be bustling your dress after the ceremony. They will need to learn how to do the bustle and will also probably be the person who helps you into the dress as well. If there is a sash and bow involved, have them do a practice run at the shop so that they get the feel of it.

4. Arrange your hair somewhat like you envision it being styled for your wedding day. If you think you might want to do half up and curled, take the time to do it so you can see if you like it. Think you might want a low bun? Make a low knot with a ponytail holder. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but it’ll give you the look you’re going for.

5. Be prepared to stay around the same weight from your first fitting until your big day. It can be costly if your weight fluctuates too much between fittings because each alteration costs money. I know this is easier said than done, especially for a stressed out bride.

Black and Yellow

Monogram It Update: I can’t show you a pic of the final product, but they turned out great. I’ll share the images with you on Sunday after I give them their monogrammed goodies! For now, seeing the gifts all wrapped up, lookin’ cute will have to suffice.

Wrapped and waiting...

I’m not big on the whole “bachelorette party” thing, which is why we have decided to have a day party that will start at my mom and dad’s house at 11am. I came up with the idea to start with the letter ‘B’ and spell out my future last name with events and stops throughout the rest of the afternoon. At our first stop (mom’s house) we will have brunch, bellinis and bloody mary’s. The rest will be a surprise that my sisters have concocted. The only theme that people are asked to take part in is to wear our wedding colors for the day which happen to be black and yellow.

I still haven’t picked out my outfit for the day yet, so that is on my list of things to do tomorrow. Here are some great pieces that would work well for the theme this weekend:

Limited, Stripe Strapless Dress, $89.90

YOOX, Robert Rodriguez Mini Skirt, $145

Bluefly, Gemma Yellow Splatter Tank, $59.49

Zappos, Diane von Furstenburg Artemis, $325

Modcloth, Double Date Dress, $64.99

Monogram It

Bartender, Four Beevos Update: While watching the movie tonight I looked through the images that the photographer took during the Inaugural festivities. She gave us a whole CD to look through. Here are some of my favorites:

Tomorrow I am picking up part of my hostess gifts for my sisters who are hosting my bachelorette party this weekend. I can’t give away what it is here, but I will say that they were being monogrammed. My go-to local place for all of my embroidering needs is Engler Embroidery. They do a great job and are inexpensive. One of my favorite things they’ve done are the “Future Mrs.” jackets.

Engler Embroidery, 330 1st Street, West Des Moines

Branstad Blooms Update: Another wedding-tastic weekend – nothing new there! We met with the florist on Saturday and I couldn’t be more happy about the arrangements they put together for me to check out. So BE-A-U-TIFUL!

I also got a few other things taken care of this weekend as well. One of them was putting the finishing touches on my wedding shoes. How do you like the “something blue”?

After such a busy weekend I think I am going to treat myself tomorrow night to a screening of one of my all-time favorite movies – SHAG. Don’t let the title fool you, this flick is actually about a Carolina dance craze. With my bachelorette party weekend coming up I think this is a fitting way to start off the week. I highly recommend snagging SHAG for a gal’s night in!

Three Decades Update:For Marissa’s birthday we decided to hit up our fave local joint, Marino’s. I like to think of it as our go-to family restaurant. It recently got reviewed by the Datebook Diner, and I highly recommend trying it out if you haven’t already.

30 never looked so good!

Tomorrow I have a follow-up floral meeting that will be taking place at Terrace Hill. My florists are coming over to check out the grounds and to make some decisions on which buds we will be using for the reception centerpieces. We are planning on going with three different configurations for the 30 plus 10-seater round tables. I’m thinking one tall arrangement, a few low arrangements and maybe for the third variation a hurricane/candle combo surrounded by a wreath of flowers. Can’t wait to see the options – love me some fresh flowers!

Peonies

Gladiolus

Garden Roses

Forsythia Branches

Tulips

Three Decades

Caribbean Queen Update: We agreed on one of the excursions – The Eco Tour – and have already made our reservation to check it out on the Wednesday of our honeymoon week. Maybe I should brush up on my snorkeling skills in the tub?

Kind of a great idea actually...

Tomorrow is a big day. Not really for me, but for my older sister Marissa who will be turning the big 3-0. It’s hard to believe that we’ve been together for the past 27+ years. As a middle child, I’ve always looked up to her for guidance and for tips on how to get out of sticky situations. She is not only my sister, but one of my best friends.

Sisters for LIFE!!!

In honor of her turning three decades old, here are gifts fit for your older and wiser sister. I love you Mariss!

Kate Spade, A Shining Light Bangle, $48

Kiehls, Perfect Pout Lip Balm Collection, $34

J. Crew, Twisted Flower Button Earrings, $55

Marc by Marc Jacobs, Square & Aviator Sunglasses, $98 each

Nordstrom, Tissue Weight Cashmere Wrap, $98

Spring Fever Update: I can just feel those warmer temps ahead – or maybe it’s just the floral fest I sported today? Either way, they’ve got me feeling rosy!

Flower Power

With the wedding just 94 short days away, I am looking forward to June 4th – the day we leave for our week-long honeymoon in tropical Antigua. We are staying at a beautiful resort, Sugar Ridge, located near Jolly Harbour.

My task now is deciding what sort of adventures we’d like to go on while there. We are planning on picking three “outings” to go on that will take pre-planning. I figure if I can set these things up beforehand, it’s less stress to deal with during the trip. Here are a few of our top contenders so far:

The Eco Tour, Adventure Antigua http://www.adventureantigua.com

Zip Line Tour, Antigua Rainforest Company http://www.antiguarainforest.com

Sunset Cruise, Miramar Sailing http://www.miramarsailing.com

Deep Sea Fishing, Nightwing Charters http://www.fishantigua.com

Spring Fever

California Dreamin’ Update: We got a bonus day out in San Fran when we learned late Saturday night that our flights back to Des Moines for Sunday had been canceled. It was a blessing in disguise – our west coast trip had been extended. After spending Friday in the wine country, and Saturday at the wedding it was nice to have more time for sightseeing. On Sunday we tootled around Chinatown and ordered sourdough bread bowls filled with clam chowder at Fisherman’s Wharf. We had a LONG day of travel yesterday, but I think as you’ll see in the pictures below, it was worth it.

Wine Country

Mr. & Mrs. Brady

Sightseeing

After being out in San Francisco for the long weekend my body is officially ready to shed it’s winter layer and welcome spring. And what better way to do that then with a new floral inspired look. Beautiful flower prints are sprouting up everywhere – and just in time for spring!

Forever 21, Spring Floral Top, $17.80

J.Crew, Floral Tulle Mini, $110

Target, Merona Floral Scarf, $12.99

Nordstrom, BP Cork Wedge Sandal, $59.95

California Dreamin’

Wine Me Update: My bags are packed and I’m ready to get on that plane to Cali…but that’ll have to wait until tomorrow night at 6:15pm. I haven’t been out to San Francisco since I visited my younger sister when she was attending USF, so I’m very excited to get back to the bay. The forecast isn’t great, but I won’t let anything rain on my parade!

If you are going to San Francisco, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair...and bring a rain jacket.

Over a summer break during college, I nannied for my cousin who lives in San Francisco. I toted him around to camps and practices and got to enjoy the city by the bay for a whole 3 months. My time out there went fast, but here are a few things I remember:

Golden Gate Park

Pac Bell Ballpark at the time, Now AT&T

Fillmore Street Shopping

We are staying near Union Square, so I’m sure there might be a quick shopping trip squeezed in somewhere. Hopefully I can hit up an H&M to see what they’ve got in this season. I’ve got spring fever and am looking to purchase a few new pieces for ‘ol the wardrobe. Check back Sunday for an update on the sights, sips, and scenes of my trip out west! Until then….
